When in the workplace employers and employees are required by the law to control substances that are hazardous health. The CoSHH Regulations 2002 – (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) were put into place to prevent or reduce workers to exposure of harmful hazardous substances.

Most businesses today use substances within the workplace. These could harm employees therefore the correct storage for hazardous substances are a must to comply with the law.


CoSHH covers substances that are hazardous to health. The substances can be in many forms including:

  • Chemicals
  • Products containing chemicals
  • Fumes
  • Dusts
  • Vapours
  • Mists
  • Gases

You can prevent or reduce workers exposure to hazardous substances within the workplace by the following:

  • Finding out what the health hazardous are and deciding how to prevent them by a risk assessment.
  • Providing safe and secure storage for any harmful hazardous substances.
  • Make sure that the workplace abide by keeping any hazardous substances controlled within a designated cupboard with correct labeling.
  • Providing employees with any information or training to help them follow the CoSHH Regulations.
  • Having plans in place for any hazardous emergencies.
